Aston University – MB4 refurbishment
Client: Aston University
Role: Quantity Surveying
Sector: Higher Education
The works involved the refurbishment of the IT services department and teaching spaces on the 4th Floor of the main building for Aston University to create new lecture theatres and offices. This refurbishment is part of a roll out of office refurbishments that are undertaken each summer by the University. The project team has been tasked to achieve a SKA ‘Gold’ accreditation for the project, which it is currently working towards.
The works consisted of the demolition of existing offices and teaching spaces including full finishes & partition removal, as well as the diversion and removal of existing M&E services. New cellular offices are to be formed using stud partitions and glazed partitions and glazed doors to allow natural light into the individual offices. All areas are to be fitted out with new, high quality finishes and M&E throughout.
Three new ‘Harvard’ style lecture theatres are to be formed within the remaining spaces. These lecture theatres have been designed in parallel between the architect and the tiered seating manufacturer CPS. The project is M&E intensive within the lecture theatres with a significant amount of new ventilation and cooling being installed and new AHUs been placed on the roof of the building to enable the works to be undertaken.
An enabling phase worth £200k has also recently been completed which involved the refurbishment of an existing space to house the IT Department so that they can be decanted into this space which will allow the lecture theatres to be created within their current offices.
Works are due on site early June 2018 and will complete early September 2018.
