Aston University – MB4 refurbishment
Client: Aston University
Role: Quantity Surveying
Sector: Higher Education
The works involved the refurbishment of the offices for Maths and AMRI on the 3rd Floor of the main building for Aston University to create new cellurised offices and open plan teaching spaces. This refurbishment is part of a roll out of office refurbishments that are undertaken each summer by the University. The project team was tasked to achieve a SKA ‘Gold’ accreditation for the project, which it achieved, and the scheme was the first project at Aston University to achieve SKA ‘Gold’ accreditation.
The works consisted of the demolition of existing offices and teaching spaces including full finishes & partition removal, as well as the diversion and removal of existing M&E services. New cellular offices were formed using stud partitions and glazed partitions and glazed doors to allow natural light into the individual offices. The offices and open-plan spaces were also fitted out with new high-quality finishes and M&E throughout.
The key challenges faced on the project included working within an existing and fully occupied building and the Contractor had to manage their site, especially around exams, to prevent disruption, noise and excessive dust. Further to this, the team had to work to tight timescales to get the project completed within 3 months and before the start of term in early September.
