Project Description

Photographic Works, 37-55 Camden Street

Client: Hatchbury

Architect: BPN Architects

Role: Quantity Surveying

Sector: Residential

Project Status: Due for completion Q4 2021

The Photographic Works is a development of 48 one and two-bedroom loft-style apartments set within Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. The existing site currently covers 0.16 hectares and is occupied by a row of two and three-storey commercial buildings and all existing buildings on site will be demolished, replacing them with new four-storey accommodation. The site was once home to a photographic works, and the design will cleverly reflect this with the detailing, along with typical Jewellery Quarter motifs within the brickwork and concrete.

The development will provide a row of four-storey, flat-roofed apartments which will be accessed directly from the street, removing the need for a lifeless common entrance lobby. The facade will have the appearance of six buildings in three defined blocks to break up the structure into traditional townhouse widths, incorporating the use of stepped-roof heights taking in the topography of the street.

Each block will also include a residents’ communal lounge and shared entrance, designed to promote activity to the street. Windows will be Crittall-style with powder-coated aluminium frames, while proposed rear elevations will utilise larger window openings within brick frames to feature a more contemporary aesthetic.
