We’re excited to tell you about the latest project update on the site of the Grade II-listed Old Black Lion pub, and look at how the works are progressing!
PMP is working alongside 2G Design and Client, Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) – a charity dedicated to protecting historic churches at risk across the country. A key focus of this project revolves around the Grade I listed St Peter’s Church. This historically significant landmark was officially vested by the CCT in 1998 to safeguard its long-term durability.
The CCT are now spearheading an ambitious and transformative project, aimed at regenerating the Old Black Lion Pub (OBL). The site holds a significant position, as it lies immediately adjacent to the church. The OBL once held a prominent role in the local area, serving as the very first inn for visitors approaching from the west. Today, it continues to be recognised as a highly valuable element of Northampton’s townscape and historical character.
The project has been one of the team’s most fascinating undertaking’s to date. Originally the site of the OBL burned down in the great Northampton fire of 1675, however, it was later restored and reopened as the Old Black Lion in 1720. As a result of this, archaeological investigations of the site yielded some truly remarkable findings. Some of these discoveries were so significant that they even made it to the BBC news! (More information on these discoveries can be found here).
We’re now working alongside OMI Architects and Conservation Architect, Crosby Granger to breathe new life into the OBL, transforming it into a vibrant community hub with integrated pub, dining and event space. The project aims to restore the building as a place that can once again serve the local community, as well as generate crucial funds for the conservation of St Peter’s Church. The project will also help to support The CCT’s work more broadly, helping them to maintain both the church and the OBL long-term.
There project is made possible thanks to the crucial funding from several key partners, including the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), HM Treasury’s Towns Fund, West Northamptonshire Council, the Architectural Heritage Fund, and the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.
