Leeds Playhouse undergoes a £1 million roof restoration with PMP at the helm, delivering Quantity Surveying and Cost Consultancy services!
Formerly known as the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds Playhouse stands as a prominent cultural landmark in the heart of the city. This multi-storey theatre first opened its doors to the public in 1990, quickly establishing itself as a vital hub for theatrical innovation and community engagement.
For 15 years, the building held the distinction of being the largest purpose-built theatre outside of London, with a unique design that was thoughtfully divided into four sections; The Main Building (for primary performances and public spaces), The Flytower (used for intricate set changes and theatrical effects), The Barber Studio (for experimental works and smaller productions), and the South East Elevation Projection (a distinctive architectural feature). In 2018, the theatre underwent a successful re-branding to ‘Leeds Playhouse’ – a name that more directly reflects its connection to the vibrant city it serves.
In 2019, a comprehensive renovation project was completed to enhance the facilities and accessibility of the space, however, this renovation was cut short, due to the sudden onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite challenges, Leeds Playhouse remained dedicated to bringing the project forward. With over three decades of use, the theatre was beginning to show signs of distress, specifically to its roof. Recognising the urgency of the repair works, PMP were appointed as Quantity Surveyor. We worked alongside Page\Park Architects, and Contractor DVC Roofing, with the aim of tackling tackle water ingress in several sections of the building.
Unlike the vast number of previously unsuccessful ‘patch jobs’ to the theatre roof, this scheme seeks to replace the roof in its entirety. This critical intervention will dramatically increase the building’s water tightness and weather resistance, providing Leeds Playhouse with a robust and sustainable long-term solution. Beyond this, the projects also incorporates a series of strategic electrical upgrades, to enhance the facility’s energy efficiency. By reducing energy consumption, the theatre will benefit from substantial long-term cost reductions, allowing more resources to be channelled directly into its acclaimed performances and community engagement programs, underscoring the theatre’s commitment to both environmental responsibility and financial sustainability.
Noting its importance to the city, and the role the Playhouse made to community development and social inclusion, these works have
greatly enhanced the visitor experience!
