PMP are thrilled to announce the completion of the new ‘Pumphandle’ Social Space for the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)!
Designed by Rock Townsend in conjunction with the LSHTM Estates team, PMP Consultants were appointed Project Manager for the ambitious creation of LSHTM’s new ‘Pumphandle’ Social Space. This transformative project involved converting the previously underutilised subterranean refectory within the Grade II listed campus. The goal was to reimagine this hidden area, turning it into a vibrant, brand new student hub, specificallt designed to offer diverse and flexible catering, social, and informal learning spaces. The project was also focused on enhancing the student experience, while making the most of the surrounding historic architecture.

The client envisioned a building designed with people in mind, and one that would foster new communities among students, staff and visitors through providing a human-centric design. This was delivered through the creation of diverse spaces, including new catering facilities, versatile breakout and study areas, and a mix of communal spaces and individual work zones, all designed to support flexible working and informal interactions.

The existing central space has been given a new lease of life, now featuring provisions specifically designed to facilitate town hall meetings, lectures, ad-hoc gatherings and various other events. The transformation will significantly enhance the sharing of world-class research, while simultaneously delivering a much-needed sense of community within the campus.
